I’m not going to kill anybody today

I’m not going to kill anybody today. I’m not going to shoot or stab or wield a weapon. Why? Because I don’t think pretending to hurt or even kill people or animals is a fun game. I will be very happy for my kids to not learn how to aim and accurately hit a “target” with a potentially lethal weapon.  I am referring to recent headlines about the NSW Shooters and Fishers Party hoping to have restrictions for under-12 year-olds to own and use high-powered air rifles relaxed. There is nothing relaxing about this campaign: http://www.skynews.com.au/politics/article.aspx?id=639327&vId=

Furthermore, and I know I will hear from some of my fav friends about this, but I am amazed at the amount of kids who are allowed to play with weapons and watch movies that have violent and scary themes. Don’t get me wrong, my boys are real grubby, tree climbing, wrestling blokes who do watch tv – and not just Miffy the smart little bunny – but why introduce and normalise violence? Their innocence will be altered soon enough as their understanding of the world expands.  Debate me please…
